There are a range of great lead-up races to the Randwick City Stakes that help punters gauge the form of the entries including the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) held the week before and the Group 3 Frederick Clissold Stakes (1200m), both of which are raced under the same handicap conditions as the Randwick City Stakes. The increased distance of the Randwick City Stakes however, ensures that only the best gallopers place in the race. It is the first event of the Autumn Carnival run over a distance greater than 1600m, and is a chance for trainers to test their horses at this more challenging length.

The mileage distance of the Randwick City Stakes means it is an excellent race for horses aimed at some of the higher status and stakes events of the carnival such as the Group 1 The BMW run over 2400m three weeks after, and the Group 2 Chairmans Handicap another week later run over an even further distance of 2600 metres. These future races are also popular as a betting double when paired with the Randwick City Stakes, and can pay extremely generous dividends to the successful punters. The Last horse to win the Randwick City Stakes/Chairmans Handicap double was No Wine No Song in 1998.

New Zealand runners have had excellent success at the Randwick City Stakes, with four winners since 2000 including Steel Phoenix (2001), Kaapgun (2002), Zabarra (2004) and Winning Belle (2005). Further back, the 1997 race saw all three places filled by New Zealand entries with Hula Flight, Linesman and Aurum Heights. And, from 1989 through until 1993 all the victors were New Zealand raiders. So when betting on the Randwick City Stakes, keep an eye on the odds for any of the New Zealand entries who have been performing well in their previous race starts.

Betting on the Randwick City States is intense and exciting, and the best way to place your wagers is through online bookmakers who offer a range of competitive odds for all of the great Sydney Autumn Carnival’s group races including the Randwick City Stakes.
